Building the bridge between Science and State to save the Atlantic Ocean currents we depend on.
Climate change has created a new strategic reality.
We now face risks that are irreversible, potentially catastrophic, and of unprecedented scale. The Atlantic circulation – the AMOC – is among the most serious, especially for Northern Europe.
The outcome is not yet fixed, but protecting against these risks requires focused efforts towards prevention, detection, and preparedness. Governments now recognize the threat and scientific institutions are expanding research, but no one is connecting them.
The Reykjavík Institute coordinates the government relationships, scientific evidence, and policy coalitions necessary for a serious response to AMOC risk.
Our collective challenge
How the ground underneath climate change has shifted, and why no one is positioned to respond to AMOC risk.
Our work in action
Achievements
Iceland designates AMOC risk as a matter of national security
Nordic governments recognise the AMOC threat
Current priorities
Building the coalition for a permanent AMOC early-warning system
Putting a climate strategy fit for AMOC and tipping-point risk on the Northern European government agenda
